On March 7, 2006, the VA Medical Center in Washington, DC started a recognition program to honor local Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs) and other fraternal groups who assist it serve our nation's veterans and their families. The Medical Center staff will honor local VSOs by flying the flag of each organization for three months from a special outdoor flagpole located next to the Medical Center entrance. The Office of Public Affairs, in conjunction with the honored VSO, will issue a brief history of the VSO to the staff and patients and a summary of its local efforts in support to the Medical Center's mission. Arlington Memorial Chapter 1964 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) in the Washington, DC area suggested this recognition program, and the MOPH was the first VSO selected for recognition.

Patriots Dick Gallant, Hershel Gober, and Greg Bresser from the Arlington Memorial Chapter 1964 (Virginia), Commander of  the Greater Washington Chapter 353 (Virginia) Steve Cobb, Patriots Ransom Jordan and Hanz Warffemius  from the Seventh Star - Seventh Stripe Chapter 2222 (Maryland), Patriot Al Ortiz  from the Semper Fi Chapter 1775 (Virginia), Virginia Patriot Dennis Geiger, President of  the LAMOPH Free State Unit 122 (Maryland) Janice Null, Medical Center Director Sanford Garfunkel, members of  his staff, police officers, Medical Center's patients, and their family members salute and pledge allegiance to the U.S. flag during the MOPH recognition ceremony on March 7, 2006.
