The Military Order of the Purple Heart awarded National Distinuished Service Award to Captain Shannon Dewayne White of the 1st Battalion, 3d United States Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) in "appreciation for the untiring and outstanding work done by Patriot Captain Shannon Dewayne White while serving as the Officer in Charge (OIC) for numerous military funerals and interments, often while volunteering on his own time, to supervise the interment of many Patriots of the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) in the hallowed ground of Arlington National Cemetery".

Captain Shannon Dewayne White (center) accepts the award  from the National American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) Coordinator and Commander of  the Greater Washington Chapter 353 Steve Cobb (left) and Senior Vice Commander of  Chapter 353 Ed Schnug (left) at Fort Myer, Virginia, on June 2, 2005. Captain White was wounded in combat in the Operation Iraqi Freedom  (OIF). He is a member and officer of  the MOPH Chapter 353.
