GUEST SPEAKERS Sgt. Maj. (Retired) Edward Schnug, USMC Edward Schnug served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942 to 1966. He honorably retired as a Sergeant Major. He was wounded in action two times while fighting in Saipan and Okinawa in 1944 and one time in Korea in 1950. His decorations include the Silver Star Medal for Gallantry in Action, 3 Purple Heart Medals, a Presidential Unit Citation (PUC), and 20 other awards for distinguished service. Since his retirement, Edward Schnug has been serving as a U.S. Marshall in the U.S. Department of Justice Federal Law Enforcement. He has been an Annual Member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) from 1985, and serves as Senior Vice Commander and Americanism Officer of the MOPH Greater Washington Chapter 353. Patriot Schnug served as Chapter 353 Commander four times. He was elected and appointed to a number of Chapter and Department of Virginia offices, and served as Department of Virginia Commander from 1992 to 1993. His achievements include the Outstanding Color Guard Award (1988), Outstanding Department Chief of Staff Award (1992), and numerous Americanism Awards (1995, 1996, 1999-2003). Edward Schnug is blessed with daughter Jody Hughes, Annual Member of the Ladies' Auxiliary Unit 353, and two grandsons. PFC (Retired) Joseph Zimmer, USA Joseph F. Zimmer served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1944 and in the U.S. Army Infantry from 1944 to 1945. He honorably retired with a Certified Disability Discharge (CDD) as Private First Class. He fought in France, Belgium, and Luxembourg, and survived the Battle of the Bulge in the last major German attack in Europe during World War II. He was wounded in February 1945 during an American forces assault on the German Siegfried Line. His major decorations include the Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB), Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, and over seven foreign combat and service awards. Joseph Zimmer earned Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Accounting, Financial Management, and Business Law. He worked in the private sector for thirty years during the Cold War and for the Office of the President of the United States from 1975 to 1994. His experience includes numerous aircraft and space programs for NASA, the Alaska pipeline, the first moon landing in 1969, nuclear submarines, and the transition of Air Traffic Controllers to the jet age. Patriot Zimmer has been a Life Member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) from 1996, and currently serves as 1-Year Trustee of the MOPH Greater Washington Chapter 353. Joseph Zimmer and his wife Betty celebrated their 57th anniversary in June 2005. They are blessed with five children and ten grandchildren.
